Chapter 2
The First Break
The Thrill of Signing
The day I signed my first record deal, I thought I’d finally made it. It was everything I’d dreamed of—validation for all the nights spent writing, recording, and performing. Philly had become my playground, and I was ready to take the next step.
The label promised opportunities: bigger stages, more exposure, and a chance to build my career in ways I couldn’t on my own. For a young artist, it felt like winning the lottery.
“The moment I thought my dreams were coming true”
The Highs of Success
For a while, it was everything I imagined.
I was performing at every open mic, connecting with artists and fans across the city. The energy was unmatched—every performance felt like a step closer to something bigger. I poured my soul into my first album, excited to share my story with the world.
The Clash of Visions
Then, everything changed.
My album was released, and for a brief moment, it felt like the culmination of everything I’d worked for. But that moment didn’t last. Without warning, my label pulled the album from iTunes.
I was furious. How could something that meant so much to me be treated like it didn’t matter at all?
The more I spoke with my team, the clearer it became: we weren’t aligned. They wanted me to follow trends, chase hits, and create music that didn’t feel like me. I wanted to make music with purpose.
“Philly became my playground, and the energy was unmatched.”
“The moment I realized we weren’t aligned.”
The Decision to Go Independent
After months of frustration, I knew what I had to do.
I bought out of my contract—a decision that cost me time, money, and sleepless nights. But it was also the most freeing choice I’ve ever made.
That experience taught me a lesson I’ll carry forever: If you don’t control your vision, someone else will.
“This is where it all began—taking control of my vision, one note at a time.”
That’s when I realized I needed to understand the industry as much as I understood my art.
When I went to college, I changed my major to music business. I was determined to learn the ins and outs of the industry so no one could ever take advantage of me again.
It wasn’t easy, but it was worth it. That decision propelled me into a new chapter of my life—one where I could build my career on my own terms.
